Back to being a bum...

Yay, get to bum around for a couple wks before my next elective begins - world music cultures - it's gonna rock! I think, anyways, 'cuz we'll be doing Northwest Coast Aboriginal music as well as Highland dances so stuff from Scotland etc. I think it will be smashing.

I had a totally great 7 days in our inaugurating class for the master's program. After spending 4 days @ the Vancouver Art Gallery then heading to Museum of Anthropology @ UBC, wow, super immersion in the visual arts but totally fun. All those horrible academic words & readings just got to be so easy by the end. A good way to get back into reading really small print & huge words. :P

Got to know a whole bunch of really cool people too, esp another teacher @ a nearby inner-city school & she's super fun. We really hit it off & I miss hanging out w/ her every day! There was also this really cute guy in the class who I refer to fondly as "tall cute guy" and another girl refers to him as "married flirty guy" - hahahaha. It really wasn't until our last day w/ presentations that we got to talking & even talked in Mandarin a bit 'cuz he's lived in HK for 9 yrs and a few in China. But yeah, he's married & has a kid so whatever - I've stopped crushing already! lol

As for the visual journal, well, I was up every nite 'til at least 1am & getting up @ 6am so insane & I think I was running on fumes by the end of it but I got it done. I had a totally awesome idea for the cover which was to write out all the words applicable to the course on a scrabble board. Ok, so didn't find one here & the 2 thrift stores nearby didn't have any either. (This is Friday afternoon & due Sat so I was scrambling but the idea really didn't come to me 'til Friday!) I also forgot my keys so was locked out for a bit & then got in but then couldn't get a hold of my roomie 'cuz I didn't memorize her cell # (darn speed dial - I've relied on you too much!) & the neighbours didn't seem to have the right #s. And banging on the door would do no good 'cuz she's hearing impaired. Yeah, go figure. Eventually, I get back in & get down to business. Last resort for the scrabble was to phone a friend nearby who has a kid & yes! he's got one so I grab it, try it out, and lickety-split, Barba-trick, it's done & I've taken a photo of it & printed it out. It's sublime. :)

That was prolly the thing I was most proud of in my journal - I got 22/25 for it. Not bad.

Start of master's program

So this week in a phrase: scrapbooking the next 6 days to get 3 credits!

Ok, so it's not just scrapbooking my life for the next 6 days but it kinda is, at least that's what a visual journal (vj) seems like! It's crazy, I mean, not only do we have to take notes in class during the art gallery walk thrus and lectures, we also have to RESPOND to them and seemingly make it all look PRETTY or ARTSY. Hmm...I know, I'm really synthesizing it to bare bones and it really means more than that but at this point, I'm getting tired of being so reflective, analytical, verbal...

We also have 2 reflections to write based on the readings & I handed in one today so I'll find out tomorrow if what I did was ok. I think I rambled too much but oh well, they said it was ok to be prose-like. And then I worried if I did that dumb APA stuff properly - makes me anal like in uni! Then we have a group project due Sun but they said for us to relax about it 'cuz it wasn't a big deal, at least in their eyes. They just want us to enjoy the process, the journey, to not really worry what the final outcome was. Then I have a final reflective paper due next Friday when this class is all done w/ Sunday. Intense 7 days & I've been up @ 6am which is brutal but thankfully, everyday's been wonderfully sunny!

What I am doing this summer

I'm enjoying the first bit of my summer vacay - had a relaxing weekend which included me getting a closet organizer (yay!) and spending quite a bit of time stuck in my room organizing everything but this was definitely a big summer goal so it's done! And now I have tons of room in my closet & bedroom in general 'cuz of this organizational thingy. It didn't require any tools which is what I like most about it 'cuz I couldn't handle screws and such. And no, it's not a girl-thing, it's an efficiency thing!

Let's see...I've also been going to the gym everyday trying out diff classes w/ diff instructors and this one abs/weights one was crazy! The lady hardly even told us how to do things, we just had to watch her whenever she switched to something diff - it felt very unsafe. My neck is definitely sore from it all and it shouldn't be so I strained to do too much. But the cardio kickbox class I went to last nite totally rocked! It was a serious workout - way better than my Sat morning ones!

I've also picked up my student card, Upass, and reading pkg for the upcoming class and boy, there is tons of it! All this reading about art gave me a headache but I'm starting to develop and appreciation for it I guess. It's interesting enough but it's not what I'm passionate about. I'm sooooo looking forward to my music elective later this month!

I do have a small camping trip before my music class but that's about it, nothing else exciting happening this summer. I guess I can work on how I want my classroom to be setup but that won't be 'til last week of Aug before school starts since they're using it for summer school.

Last week of school...as a teacher...

Yesterday we had our monthly Social Responsibiity Assembly aka. End of Month Assembly. I found out that some Americans don't understand the use of "assembly" in our Cdn schools but basically it's the whole school gathering together for messages, awards, honours, etc. It's fun but since my teaching partner is the head teacher, that means by default, I have to help. I'm looking forward to next yr when I can actually sit & just watch!

So it took me 1.5 hrs to get projects from kids, download them as movies, then set up laptop w/ projector to show during assembly. Thank you God for it working when I wanted it to! So totally thankful that it only took a few seconds for it to get going.

Was a bit stressful going in the morning 'cuz I knew there'd be tons of little details to take care of but me & Steph are a pretty tight team, esp under the crunch. All professional, zero cattiness - just the way I like it, esp at a school where most teachers are women!

Today was the Grade 7 Farewell Assembly and again, tons of little details but we'd gotten most of them dealt w/ before today so just have to compile everything & check it over. From what we heard, everyone said that it was very smooth, very well done. I think all the kids enjoyed dressing up & graduating but who knows, some very sad/nervous/upset faces while giving out the plaques for the diff awards.

I actually wore a dress today - something I NEVER do at school - and I got a lotta compliments. Again, I think it's the hair but every notice how some of the women over do it in the compliment dept? They gush & draw even more attention - yikes! They didn't like that I wore flip flops w/ my dress but it can go both ways & I wanted to go cas. I told them that it's the "from the school to the beach" type of outfit - seriously! If I was closer, if it was hotter, if I had a new swim suit, I totally would'a been there! Anyways, that's that & yes, thank you God again for today's grad slideshow working out so well & who cares if you could hear the kids sing or not? I don't look silly, they do & they were goofballs during all of our practices so I give that one a big "W". :P

Master Cleanse - a test of will & self-control

So I've been doing the Master Cleanse and am on my 8th day. If you don't know about it, check this: http://www.therawfoodsite.com/mastercleanse.htm

I'm on Day 8 and have 2 more days but can I say that last week was not the best week to start it all? Yeah, I missed out on a tea, teacher's lunch, grade 7 pizza lunch, and bbq! But mostly I was just aiming to be off this thing by Thurs which is our end of the year bbq which is a new thing this yr. Anyways, I'm feeling good although have been a wee bit light headed whenever I get up too quickly but that passes. I know, you're thinking, um, that isn't a good thing? but just a slight symptom when you're not doing anything but drinking that magic potion. :P

So, feeling pretty good and have had lotsa compliments but maybe 'cuz I cut my bangs too...hmm...but the whole weight loss thing is a by-product to this cleanse, mostly it's to clean out the system, specifically intestines, colon, kidneys. My dad was upset to hear I was on it again (was on it earlier this yr) 'cuz he said I'm a young person and I don't need to do any of that stuff but he should try it and tell me that he doesn't feel better 'cuz of it! Only thing is that I went grocery shopping in anticipation of ending the cleanse this week and spent like $200! Well, mostly on diff condiments I wanted to try 'cuz I've been spending so much time watching foodtv & reading my "Everyday Food" mags! lol But did get a free lawn chair 'cuz of spending so much so bonus!
